You’ve traded the backhand volleys for beach views, but that doesn’t mean your favorite activity needs to take a vacation. Maui offers a friendly and accessible public pickleball scene that welcomes visitors from the mainland. Here is your comprehensive guide to the best spots for a quick dink during your island escape.
1. South Maui (Kihei) – Waipuilani Park
If you’re staying in the popular Kihei area, this is your primary destination for public, dedicated courts.
- Location: Waipuilani Park Tennis Courts (near Maui Sunset Condo, Kihei).
- Courts: 8 dedicated pickleball courts (formerly tennis courts 5 & 6).
- Cost/Membership: Free to play. No membership required.
- Best Times: Daily, 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Pickup games are frequent, especially in the mornings since it can get quite windy in the afternoons.
- Vibe: Very well organized rotation and highly popular; the island’s first designated public courts. Expect a lively, social atmosphere with locals and visitors mixing easily. Drop-ins welcome. Court surfaces show some wear and are not always well-maintained, but the energy is high and the views are spectacular.
2. West Maui (Lahaina/Napili) – Lahaina Civic Center & Napili Park
For those on the West side, you have two excellent, free public options.
| Venue | Location | Courts | Cost | Best Times for Pickup | Notes |
| Lahaina Civic Center | Lahaina | 4 Dedicated, Outdoor | Free | Every morning (drop-in starts around 7:45 AM). Some evenings (around 4:00-5:00 PM). | Located near the Lahaina Post Office. A hub for free play on the West side. |
| Napili Park | Napili (Maiha Street) | 4 Dedicated, Outdoor | Free | Open Daily 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM. | Beautiful, resurfaced courts. Organized pickup less frequent than at Lahaina Civic Center. |
3. Central & Upcountry Maui
If you somehow find yourself exploring the North side or Upcountry, check out these local pickleball spots:
- War Memorial Complex (Wailuku): Lined courts on upper tennis courts. Free drop-in play is generally scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Great for evening play.
- Eddie Tam Gym (Makawao): Indoor option in Upcountry. Free open play is often scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM (check county schedules for current times as this is subject to change). A great escape from the midday sun!
Future Teaser: Aloha Pickleball Complex (Kihei)
While not yet open, this world-class facility is under construction and will redefine Maui pickleball for future visitors. Access certainly won’t be free, but what’s another fifty bucks when you already spent so much to get here?
- Location: Maui Research & Technology Park, next to the Maui Brewing Company in Kihei.
- Scale: Planned as an 18-court complex, featuring 8 fully covered and shaded courts, a championship court, and premium surfaces.
- Amenities: Will include a pro shop, state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center (with cold plunge/sauna), a pickleball academy, and social gathering spaces.
- Status: Groundbreaking occurred in late 2025. Estimated opening is late 2026.
