Grand Champions vs Wailea Elua: Beachfront or Better Value?

  • Walk to the beach: Elua: 90-second walk to Ulua Beach, Grand Champions: 15-minute walk to Wailea Beach.
  • Pools: Both have two beautiful pools. Grand Champions has a hot tub at each, Elua has one spa.
  • Arrival: Grand Champions: straight to your condo with a door code. Elua: check in at the security gate first.
  • Price: For a sample week in Feb 2027, a typical 2-bedroom was $12,154 at Elua and $4,373 at Grand Champions.
  • Our verdict: Elua has the edge on location and grounds, while Grand Champions is clearly the better value.

Grand Champions Villas and Wailea Elua Village are two of the best-known condo complexes in Wailea. While they sit less than a mile apart, they offer slightly different experiences at dramatically different price points. Elua is oceanfront on Ulua Beach, gated, and among the priciest condo complexes in Wailea. Grand Champions is set back among the golf course and tennis club, quieter, and far easier on the budget.

Our candid take is that while Elua is the nicer resort in several ways, it is also very expensive. For most visitors to Maui, Grand Champions will nearly always offer the better value by a wide margin. We ran the numbers for a one-week stay February 6-13, 2027 and a typical two-bedroom at Elua cost nearly three times as much. Check out the full analysis below for more details.

Beach Access: Elua Wins, Clearly

This is the main reason people pay for Elua. The resort sits directly on Ulua Beach, with a wide oceanfront lawn above the water. Owners there describe the walk from condo to sand as about 150 yards, or 90 seconds. Elua is also on the Wailea Beach Path, the paved oceanfront walk that runs past the Marriott, Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, and Fairmont before ending at Polo Beach.

Guests there rave about Ulua Beach itself. The snorkeling is good along the rocky points at either end, and green sea turtles are regulars. In winter, people spot whales from the path and from their lanais. Elua also has a private, gated ocean overlook with loungers and shade, which regulars call the best sunset seat in Wailea.

Grand Champions is up the hill about half a mile and not directly on the beach. Wailea Beach is a 15-minute walk or a 3-minute drive, and Ulua and Mokapu are also a few minutes by car. Grand Champions guests tend to drive, park, and carry beach chairs and gear from the public beach parking lots. Fortunately, Wailea has a beach for every occasion, so be sure to check out our Wailea beaches guide before you pack up the car.

Perhaps the most important question then becomes, how much are you willing to pay for a beachfront location? If you want to live in your swimsuit and simply stroll down to the beach whenever the mood strikes, Elua is your best option. But it will cost you thousands of dollars more than staying at Grand Champions.

Pools & Amenities

Grand Champions Villas has two pool areas, each with its own hot tub, BBQ grills, and changing rooms. The larger, rounded pool is the quiet option and is located on the north edge of the property, adjacent to the Wailea Blue golf course. The squared pool in the interior of the complex is the family-friendly one where kids can noodle it up and splash around as much as they like.

Guests staying at Grand Champions also enjoy easy walking access to the Wailea Blue golf course and the Wailea Tennis Club (for a fee), both of which border the property. That can make for an easy car-free day when your itinerary doesn’t include beach time.

Wailea Elua Village also offers two distinct pool areas, although only one of them includes a hot tub. The upper pool that’s further away from the beach is the designated quiet pool. The lower pool sits beside the beach, next to an oceanfront pavilion with a full kitchen, an ice machine, shared BBQs, a lending library, and covered seating. There’s also a small gym that can feel a bit dated, along with a pickleball court.

Guests frequently rave about the grounds. Elua covers about 24 acres at low density, with orchids, flowering trees, and a fish pond, and reviewers consistently call the landscaping the best they have seen at a Maui condo resort.

While Elua has a few more on-site amenities and sets up a bit better for enjoying sunsets from the pool deck, Grand Champions has the edge on hot tubs, with one at each pool.

Atmosphere & Arrival

Both are low-rise, low-density complexes with mature tropical landscaping, and both are quite relaxed compared to the larger Wailea resort hotels.

Elua is gated, with 24-hour security. You check in at the security office when you arrive and the guard provides you with a parking pass, a welcome packet, and directions to your condo. Guests describe the gate staff as friendly and quick to assist, including with the occasional noisy neighbor. Elua definitely feels a bit more like a private resort, although some guests note that some condos close to the ocean get quite a bit of foot traffic past the lanais.

Grand Champions is more relaxed and a bit more self-service. While there’s a guard shack, there’s no gate at the entrance and the front office serves owners and the AOAO, not guests. Most condo owners send a digital door code before your stay begins, which allows you to arrive on your own schedule, park in your reserved spot, and walk straight to your condo.

Shops & Restaurants: This One Is a Tie

Elua is next door to The Shops at Wailea so it’s an easy walk to Island Gourmet Markets and upscale restaurants like Lineage and Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar. Guests peg the walk at 5-7 minutes. You can also access quite a few resort restaurant options via a quick stroll along the Wailea Beach Path.

Grand Champions is also only about a 5-minute walk from The Shops at Wailea, although it’ll take a bit longer to walk home as you’re coming back up the hill. Restaurants like Monkeypod and Matteo’s are also an easier walk from Grand Champions than they are from Elua.

Overall, for coffee shop access, picking up a few groceries, and enjoying happy hours and nice dinners out, we’d say the two complexes are equally convenient.

Quick Cost Comparison: One Week in February

With the cost of the typical Maui vacation on the rise, we ran the numbers to see just how much extra you’ll end up paying for Elua over Grand Champions. In early October 2026 we searched Airbnb for the same stay at both complexes: February 6 to 13, 2027 (7 nights), for 4 guests in a 2-bedroom condo. February is peak whale season and one of the most popular times of the year to visit Wailea.

Across 16 two-bedroom condos listed at Grand Champions and 14 at Wailea Elua, here are the results. Prices below are Airbnb’s quoted rates for the week, including cleaning and service fees, but before adding Hawaii’s 18.712% state and county lodging taxes.

Grand Champions VillasWailea Elua Village
Number of 2BR condos compared1614
Lowest price for the week$2,775$8,270
Typical (median) price$4,373$12,154
Highest price$6,062$14,742
Typical price per night$625$1,736
Typical week with 18.712% tax$5,191$14,428

Let this sink in a bit. The typical 2-bedroom condo at Elua cost $12,154 for the week, while the typical 2-bedroom condo at Grand Champions cost only $4,373 for the same dates. That’s a difference of $7,781 before tax, or about $9,240 once tax is added. Put another way, a week at Elua costs nearly 3 times as much.

Surprisingly, the price ranges don’t even overlap. The least expensive Elua condo ($8,270) costs over $2,000 more than the most expensive 2-bedroom at Grand Champions ($6,062).

These are of course Airbnb’s quoted rates, which reflect the platform’s commission structure. Owners at both complexes often charge less when you book with them directly. See our current rates and availability to find out how much you can save by booking direct.

What Does $7,800 Buy?

That premium buys a lovely setting and, above all else, the 90-second walk to the sand. That said, it’s important to remember that the beach itself is public, as are all beaches across the entire state of Hawaii. Ulua, Mokapu, and Wailea beaches are open to everyone, with public parking access, and they are only a few minutes by car from Grand Champions. Regardless of where you stay, you can easily swim, snorkel, and walk barefoot in the sand in exactly the same places.

What else might you buy with $7,800? Plenty. That covers a rental car, a whale watch for four, a few rounds of golf, a luau, and dinner out every night, with plenty of dollars to spare. Or you could even spend it on a second full week at Grand Champions!
